R&I (Research and Inquiry) |
This is a student-initiated on-line threaded
discussion. Write at least one 100-200 word discussion entry every week. You
can start a new thread, or participate in an existing thread. The discussion
topic should be related to our class topics. You need to
have at least 15 by the end of the semester. However, if you forget, write an
extra one
in the next week. No more than two per week will be counted toward your
total. Make sure the entries do not repeat anyone else's ideas, have a clear
point of view and arguments behind your position. Make at least one
reference to the text book, in
APA style
(without the list of references) |
There is no formal grading, although I read all
discussion entries. 30 points, unless entries are too short,
meaningless, or lack a reference to the textbook. |
|
Quizzes
(12 quizzes, 5 questions each) |
These are open book on-line quizzes that help
to make sure you have read and understood the assigned text. There will be a
link to it from the Quizzes page. You will have 10 minutes to
complete the quiz, and only one attempt. Quizzes will be open 24 hours prior
to class specified in Calendar, and closed when your class starts. If you
experience a technical problem, e-mail me and I will reset the quiz for you. |
5 points each; 60 points total |
|
Educational Issue Group Project |
Each
group of 4-5 students will receive a controversial issue in education to
research and present. Group members will develop a website and use it
as a visual aid for presentation. You will research the issue
together, but each student will write a Perspective on an Issue
paper (individual conclusions). All conclusions will be included in the
website, and also submitted through Blackboard.
|
49 points for the website
+20 for presentation
+24 for Perspective paper;
93 points total. |
|
Lab Report (1500-2000 words) |
The Lab Experience is an independent study of
culture. It involves an interview and an observation. After the field
research is completed,
write an analytical report. |

|
Philosophy paper (900-1100 words) |
The Philosophy of Education paper is an
exercise in independent thinking. You will chose your own topic, but it has
to connect to one of the major topics of the course. This is a key
assessment, and as such must be uploaded to your e-portfolio and give me
permission to see it (see detailed instructions on the
Philosophy Paper page). |

Final Exam
(10 questions) |
This is a closed-book multiple choice test,
administered in a computer lab. It includes exactly the same questions as in your
quizzes. You will be given 10 randomly selected questions, to be completed
in 20 minutes. |

Attendance |
You will lose 5 points
every time you miss a class or group work day; no exceptions. However, you can get
these
points back by writing one review for each missed class, for up to 3 classes
(after that you simply lose 5 points per class). |
-5 per missed class

|
Reviews
(500 words) |
These are only to get back points lost due to
attendance. Find an article on education from any
refereed
(peer-reviewed)
educational journal, either on hard copy or
on-line. Write a
500 word review, which includes three parts: Begin with
the exact reference to the article in
APA style, including author, title,
journal name, volume, page numbers, etc. Provide web address if on-line.
Summarize the article. Do not copy and paste text from the article; use your
own words. Conclude with your response to the article (agree, disagree, and
why). |
+5 per each review. You cannot gain
extra credit by writing a review. |
|
Class participation |
Come each class prepared: have notes in
response to questions in the calendar.
Earn extra points for showing consistent
participation in all classroom and on-line discussions and projects. Coming to class unprepared may cause you to lose points.
Fair warning: Blackboard tracks your on-line presence. |
