Purpose

The purpose of this course is to focus on developing and implementing culturally and socially diverse curriculum, pedagogy and policy in K-12 educational settings. Examine current research and practices related to pluralism in education (this is what the Catalogue says). We will briefly revisit the history of education for the dominated groups, and then develop a conceptual understanding of pluralism in education. Every student will have to consider implications of this understanding for his or her professional practice.

Please see MAT Program Outcomes if you are in that program.

Use APA style. Do not forget a list of references at the end of your paper. No footnotes or endnotes, please.

GRE Analytical Writing Rubric

I use this rubric to evaluate the writing aspect of your papers. Adapted from The Introduction to the Analytical Writing Section of the GRE General Test. The level descriptions are here.

Drafts

bulletYou can show me as many drafts f each paper as you want, if you bring it in person and before the deadline.

Class participation

bulletThe class discussion is the whole point of coming to class. If you do not try to talk, you do not learn. Thus, participation of everyone is expected as a matter of course. However, if you are consistently brilliant, you may get 5 extra points.

Attendance

If you miss a class, lose 5 points, or write a 500 word review. These are only to get back points lost due to attendance; not an extra credit option. Find an article on pluralism in education from any scholarly educational journal. Write a 500 word review, which includes three parts: Begin with the exact reference to the article in APA style. including author, title, journal name, volume, page numbers, etc. Provide web address if on-line. Summarize the article. Do not copy and paste text from the article; use your own words. Conclude with your response to the article (agree, disagree, and why).
